We’ve polled a total of 12 Appen Contributors for the earnings statistics and other user insights and ratings in this guide as part of a continuing effort. (Please note that all earnings figures are in US dollars.)

What exactly is Appen?

They’re also a platform for crowdworking. They offer contributors all around the world a variety of micro-jobs and longer-term freelancing assignments linked to data collecting and AI training.

Below, we’ll go through how this works in further depth.

Check for Authenticity

The event will take place on December 23, 2021.

Here are some of the reasons why we think Appen is real:

  • Appen is a firm that is traded on the stock exchange. They’ve been around for a long time, and information about the firm, founders, and employees is readily available.
  • Appen has received mostly good feedback on social media. They keep up with their social media profiles. Workers ask questions about certain postings, and most of them are addressed, but some aren’t (check customer support quality details).
  • Appen’s website is well-designed and simple to explore.
  • There are no outrageous earnings claims or sign-up incentives.
  • The privacy policy is simple to locate and comprehend.
  • Becoming an Appen contributor is completely free.
  • They have to pay (proof)

Here are some of the red flags we discovered in the Appen area:

  • There is no page with terms and conditions/terms of use. Although it isn’t needed by law, most websites do contain it. Appen, on the other hand, has a number of legal policies.

Is Appen a genuine app?

Appen is a real company. Appen is clearly not a fraud, given that they’ve been operating for so long, have worked (and continue to work) with a wide variety of high-end customers, and have thousands of contributors all around the world.

That said, just because Appen is legitimate doesn’t imply it’s flawless or worthwhile. Continue reading to learn more about how it works and if it’s a smart investment.

Note: Do you have any proof or evidence that we should be aware of? Please leave a remark or get in touch with us.

Proof of Payment Appen

Here are a handful of Payoneer payment proofs from our guide writer to prove that Appen is legitimate:

Is Appen a safe product?

Your personal information is the major source of worry when it comes to Appen’s security. Appen gathers sensitive data such as your address, phone number, email, and even a picture of your ID, and there has been a data breach in the past. The odds of this information being stolen and used maliciously are slim, and the repercussions, if they occur, are unlikely to be severe. Even so, it’s something to keep in mind.

Tip: As usual, make sure your Appen account has a unique password. It’s also a good idea to use a different email address than your main one.

Another thing to keep in mind is that fraudsters are increasingly targeting prospective Appen donors. Remember that Appen will only contact you through email from a @appen address, and that you should never give out any critical personal information to anybody outside of the Appen job portal.

Note: Read our 12 Appen customer reviews to see how real people feel about Appen’s security.

The following is an obligatory disclaimer: Nothing on the internet is completely secure or private. The above are our own thoughts based on our own research. Please use care and do your own research.

Quality is supported by Appen.

“We believe in helpful, honest, and responsive channels of contact with our crowd,” Appen said of their crowd code of conduct.

The following are the support experiences of the 12 Appen employees we polled:

To be honest, they have a lousy customer service department that answers whenever they want.

u/Fabulous-Budget-5636

Yes, due to a delay in my payment. I was given support.

Anonymous

Here are some further findings from our investigation of Appen’s service quality:

  • On Appen’s Facebook page, many employees have complained about delayed customer service in reference to support queries. Many of these remarks are left unanswered (while other comments are answered).
  • Users have described Appen’s support staff as “slow,” “non-existent,” “rude and useless,” “bad,” and “catastrophic,” according to the majority of Trustpilot evaluations. Although not all support evaluations were negative, it was still a bad omen.
  • Appen does not seem to reply to third-party site evaluations (or not often anyway).

Appen’s Contributors (independent contractors) operate on a variety of sub-platforms to supply training data for artificial intelligence and machine learning models, including:

  1. Appen Connect is a service provided by Appen. is a service provided by Appen.
  2. Annotate Appen (aka Figure Eight)
  3. Appen No. 9 (China)

These platforms are used by Appen to teach and deliver work to freelancers. Data collecting, search assessment, transcription, translation, online research, and other tasks are available on each platform.

How Appen works for contributors

Below, we’ll go through each platform and some of the particular prospects in further depth.

Earning Potential of Appen

Contributors aren’t paid on an average or anticipated basis, according to Appen. They do, however, state:

Our objective is to pay our employees more than the minimum wage in every area where we do business.

Code of Ethics for the Appen Crowd

They also state that their positions are open to anyone who “love competitive wages.”

Here are the facts we obtained about Appen’s pay rate based on 12 Appen Contributors we’ve polled so far:

  • $4.35 per hour on average
  • $4.25 is the median hourly wage.
  • The highest hourly wage is $10.
  • The cheapest hourly rate is $1.

Is Work Available on a Regular Basis?

“You will have the freedom to plan your hours to meet your lifestyle and to work around your professional and family responsibilities,” Appen states of job availability. You have complete control on when and how much you want to work.”

However, they do not exactly state how much employment is available.

According to our research, although you may be able to work as little as you want, you won’t be able to work as much as you want since the amount of labor available at any one moment is restricted and unpredictable. Appen will assign you different amounts of work based on your talents, past experience, and demographics.

“How frequently can you generate money from Appen?” we questioned 12 Appen contributors.

Their replies are as follows:

  • 3 stated just a few times every month
  • 6 a couple times every month
  • 1 stated a few of times every week
  • 1 recited many times a day
  • 1 nearly usually spoken
  • 0 said it all the time.

For additional information on these figures, see the complete customer evaluations below.

  • What’s the bottom line? Appen is a flexible opportunity that may give long-term employment on occasion, although job shortages do not seem to be prevalent. I wouldn’t put too much faith on Appen as a reliable source of revenue.

Breakdown of Appen Reviews and Ratings

Summary

Appen offers freelancers all around the world a wide range of flexible work-from-home options. It’s simple and fast to get started, but pay rates might be low, and employment availability varies widely, so it’s a trade-off. Overall, Appen is a nice way to make some additional cash, but it isn’t a suitable place to look for full-time job or competitive compensation.

Breakdown of the Ratings

The Overall Hustle Rating (above) is a weighted average that considers all of the individual categories below, with pay rate and employment availability being the most important factors. This will show you how this hustle compares to others in the Hustle Finder.

1.5 out of 5 stars

With Appen, you can expect to earn roughly $4.35/hour based on genuine user data.

1.38/5 Work Availability

The majority of people we polled said they got employment through Appen a few times a month, with an average monthly wage of $46.36.

3/5 Payout Options

Appen accepts both PayPal and Payoneer as payment methods, although only one per platform is supported.

Minimum payout of 3.5/5

On the Connect platform, Appen’s minimum payment is $0.01, whereas on the Annotate platform, it’s $10.

1/5 Payout Speed

Payments may take up to 30 days to process.

3/5 support

Appen support, based on what we’ve read online and learned through Contributors, might require some improvement.

3/5 based on user experience

Aside from earning possibilities, Appen provides beginner-friendly, remote options. The employment they provide give some diversity, may be fun or intriguing on occasion, and can teach you new skills. The platform is also simple to use, albeit some users believe the UI is outdated and clumsy.

On the negative side, Appen offers no meaningful benefits or incentives, job security is non-existent, and there is no formal community place for employees to mingle.

3/5 for safety

Appen is typically secure since it does not need a lot of personal information. They may, however, request your identification at some time, and they have had a data breach in the past.

Appen’s Money-Making Strategies

Appen offers a wide range of opportunities to earn money, including a variety of projects and activities. Here’s a rundown of the most prevalent opportunities (and where you may find them):

Projects for Voice Recording 1 (Appen Connect)

The goal of speech recording initiatives is to gather voice recordings from employees in order to train AI models.

Voice recording project listing example

You’ll need to download Appen’s mobile app to accomplish these activities. This may be downloaded from their website (a link will be provided when you apply for a project that needs it).

  • Pay rate: Hourly pay rates range from $20 to $40. Each assignment pays from $0.02 to $7 and takes ranging from a few seconds to 15 minutes to complete.
  • Appen Connect, Appen’s platform, always has a large number of these assignments available in over 30 languages. The bulk of the assignments are written in English or Hindi. Also, I’ve seen numerous projects expressly request a female voice for data training, but I’ve never seen a project directly request a male voice. As a result, being a woman may help you qualify for more of these jobs.

Tip: After clicking the record button, take a half-second break and don’t finish the audio recording too abruptly.

2. Data Gathering (Appen Connect)

The information gathered in these initiatives might range from user surveys and statistics to photographs and videos taken with certain mobile devices and models. This implies that you may be required to have certain items in order to participate. Some initiatives may demand that you have a certain age, gender, or ethnic background.

Video data collection task example

  • Pay rate: I’ve seen projects here with pay rates ranging from $5 to $50 per hour. Because this category covers such a wide range of data collection methods, the time necessary for a work may vary from a few seconds to an hour, with compensation per task ranging from $0.02 to $25+.
  • Availability: It’s pretty hit-or-miss. You should be able to locate anything every few days in most cases. People who speak English, are from Europe, and possess Apple devices have the best chance of finding projects.

Tip: Having Apple and Android devices might open up additional opportunities for you. However, it is unlikely that it is worthwhile to purchase a new, costly gadget for this purpose.

3. Evaluation of search and social media (Appen Connect)

Improve search results on engines like Google, moderate social media postings, annotate data from the web, and more are all part of search evaluation tasks.

Search evaluation job listings

  • Pay rate: It seems that the average reported pay rate is roughly $12.50-$13.50 per hour.
  • Part-time (10-20 hours a week) seems to be the norm for these positions.

3. Jobs in Translation and Transcription (Appen Connect)

This kind of employment will be just up your alley if you’re interested in transcribing work (changing audio to text) or if you’re multilingual.

  • Pay range: $1-$5 per work, or $10-$30 per hour.
  • Work: There is enough of work. When it comes to translation work, those who are bilingual or trilingual have a significant advantage.

Tips:

  • To avoid being DQed, use correct punctuation and grammar norms.
  • Investing in a nice set of headphones may help you work more efficiently and minimize stress when transcribing.
  • More tips on how to enhance your efficiency may be found in our entire guide to transcribing jobs.

Projects of the UHRS

UHRS website homepage

Microsoft’s UHRS (Universal Human Relevance System) is a different crowdsourcing platform that may be accessed through Appen. You may have previously used it on Clickworker, Datamime, Oneforma, Quadrant Resource, Lionbridge, or Teemwork.ai, among other micro-tasking sites.

It is suggested that you only use one vendor to access UHRS. If you’re currently utilizing UHRS via another platform (such as the ones listed above), either turn it off before joining Appen or leave it alone.

Jobs like search engine optimization, picture labeling, and many more fall within this category. You’ll virtually always have something to work on here if you like completing these jobs.

  • Pay ranges from $0.01 to $0.20 per assignment on average. Earning potential is estimated to be between $3 and $6 per hour.
  • There is a lot of job available here.

Tip: Take frequent pauses since the chores are repetitious and might cause eye and brain strain.

Micro-assignments (Annotate Appen)

This is basically Appen’s take on UHRS. Appen Annotate, often known as Figure Eight, is a different product from Appen Connect.

Appen Annotate micro tasks preview

Transcription, social media classification, content moderation, data annotation, and more tasks may be found here.

  • Tasks are paid at a rate of $0.01-$0.50 per task. This equates to around $2-$5 each hour.
  • Work is plentiful, but uninteresting, as it is on many comparable sites.

How to Make a Profit on Appen

When it comes to being paid on Appen Connect vs. Appen Annotate, the process is a little different.

Here’s how it works:

Appen Connect

Payoneer will be used to pay you for Appen Connect.

  • $0.01 is the minimum payment.
  • Payoneer costs $3 every transaction, plus a 2% currency conversion fee for anyone outside the United States.
  • Payments are made within 30 days of the invoice being sent. On average, payments take 7-15 days.

To get paid, you must submit invoices for each project on which you have worked. Some tasks produce invoices automatically at the end of the month, but you’ll have to create your own in the majority of circumstances. Don’t worry, it’s much easy and less frightening than it seems.

Invoice creation screen

To make an invoice manually at the end of each month, go to your Appen dashboard’s “My Invoices” area and create an invoice for each project you worked on that month. If you double-check all of the facts, you should have no trouble being paid on time.

Appen Annotate

Appen Annotate makes payments using PayPal, which is a more simpler method. You may request a withdrawal at any moment after you’ve reached the minimum payment.

  • The minimum payment is $10.
  • Fees: Some locations have no fees, while PayPal charges a 2% currency conversion fee to Indian consumers.
  • 15-30 days is the average turnaround time.

Appen’s Extra Features

Appen No. 1 (Appen China)

Appen also has a China-specific platform named Appen 9. It accepts various payment options and targets Chinese residents who can read, speak, and write Mandarin. More information may be found here.

Appen Mobile (version 2)

Appen Mobile app preview

Appen Mobile is available for both iOS and Android devices. It’s essential for certain activities and also allows you to make money on the fly with largely data collection-related projects (like voice recording).

Pros and Cons of Appen

The Good

  • Work from home opportunity with a lot of flexibility.
  • Company has a good reputation. Appen has a lengthy history and has been included on various “top remote firm” lists.
  • Different methods to make money/opportunities Allows you to attempt new activities and acquire new talents.

The Bad

  • It’s a hit-or-miss situation when it comes to support. Appen employs thousands of people, and it seems that their help crew takes some time to respond to all of their support requests. Some users have also complained about unhelpful/unknowledgeable support personnel.
  • VPN warning is false. When I went to join up with Appen Annotate, I received the message “VPN Detected: In order to access jobs, you must deactivate your VPN.” I didn’t have a VPN installed, and I tried using an incognito window and a new computer, but nothing worked. It seems to be a problem, and I’m not sure how to solve it other than to try again another day and hope it fixes itself.
  • Qualification tests that are not compensated. To apply to some projects on Appen Connect, you may need to take qualifications. Your hourly rates may suffer as a result of this unpaid time.
  • It’s a strange payment mechanism. Appen needs you to utilize a separate payment method depending on the platform you’re working on, which is difficult and restricting for some (Annotate vs. Connect).
  • There are no community features. It’d be great if there was an Appen forum or something similar where contributors could hang out and ask questions.
  • Earnings that are inconsistent. There’s no way of knowing how much money you’ll make with Appen. There is no need for a minimum hourly pay, and labor availability varies greatly.

Is Appen a Good Investment?

Appen is a fascinating option that you should investigate if you’re seeking for a simple method to generate money or want to start working from home. The platform offers a wide range of chances; getting started is simple and fast, and you could pick up some new skills along the road. You may even be able to get a long-term project doing something you like!

However, don’t have unrealistic expectations. Appen isn’t an ideal opportunity, and you shouldn’t expect to find full-time job or earn a lot of money here.

How to Begin Using Appen

Getting started with Appen is simple, but the steps will differ depending on whatever platform you choose to use. To get a sense of the sort of job you love, we suggest joining up and checking out both platforms.

We’ve written simple step-by-step guidelines to help you get started with Appen Connect or Appen Annotate:

Tip: If you are rejected from jobs enough times on both platforms, you may cease seeing new work on your dashboard. My idea is that they have an internal mechanism in place to weed out dishonest employees, so keep that in mind. When working on any project or activity, accuracy should always come first. Aim for more than 95% accuracy on all tasks.

How to Get Started with Appen Connect

Step 1: Make an account.

To register, go to Appen Connect.

Note: If you already have an Appen Annotate account, you may use the same email and password to log in to the Appen Connect platform.

You’ll need to submit your email address, password, first and last names, and country of residence to establish a new account.

Appen Connect account creation page

You’ll be prompted to verify your email address once you’ve created your account. Then sign in.

Step 2: Create a Profile

You’ll be prompted to set up your language and language region after login in to your new account.

After that, you’ll be presented with two options:

  1. Continue customizing your profile
  2. Job Search

Option #1 is the best choice (setting up your Profile completely before browsing for jobs). More projects will become available on Appen as a result, offering you more work (and greater chances) to pick from.

In order to set up your profile, you’ll need to provide the following information:

  • Information that is fundamental (first name, last name, email, contributor type)
  • Linguistics (you can add additional languages you speak here)
  • Location (address, city, nation, province/state, postal/zip code, and history of residence)
  • Education is really important (highest level of education, qualification)
  • prior knowledge and experience
  • Number to call

Fill in as much information as you are able to/afraid to. Make certain it’s correct. After that, you may check to see whether everything is right and complete.

You’ll be led to your dashboard after setting up your profile, where you may be requested to submit even more information about your devices or documents. Depending on where you reside, this will be different.

In India, for example, our guide writer was required to present a PAN Card/Passport for identification verification. Meanwhile, I’m in Canada and haven’t been requested to provide any proof of identification.

After that, you’ll be asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement. This is to safeguard Appen’s customers, since you may be working on projects involving sensitive data.

Last but not least, you must set up and connect your Payoneer account.

Step 3: Begin applying for jobs and working on them.

Okay, you’re all set to begin working on projects! You can examine a project’s data, kind, pay rate, and workload via the Appen Connect dashboard.

Before applying, thoroughly read the project description. Make sure you qualify before applying for initiatives that demand you to be from a certain country, speak a specific language, or have a specific phone. Certain occupations will also need you to complete an unpaid qualifying exam before you can start working for pay.

Note that you usually only have one opportunity to pass a certification exam, so give it your all and pay attention!

How to Get Started with Appen Annotate

Step 1: Make an account.

To get started, go to Appen Annotate and establish an account.

Note: If you already have an Appen Connect account (or established one using the instructions above), you may use the same email and password to log in to the Appen Annotate platform.

Step 2: Complete Your Personal Information

Appen Annotate makes it quicker and faster to set up your profile than Appen Connect.

To create a profile, enter your email address, password, and first and last names. After that, confirm your email address and log in. After that, connect your PayPal account.

Step 3: Take the Qualifying Exam

You will be given a single, paid qualifying exam by Appen. Take it to get your first Badge and gain access to more assignments.

Step 4: Get to Work

You’re now ready to begin working on projects! You’ll earn higher badges and get access to better positions if you improve your accuracy and internal ratings.
